Name: Gresham Palace
Category: Architecture, castles and historic districts
Location: 1051 Budapest, Roosevelt tér 5-6.
Description
An example of the Art nouveau style in Budapest. Dating back to 1907, it has aged badly but it is still one of the largest buildings in the city. The name is that of a London Insurance Company which bore the name of the founder of the London Stock Exchange, Thomas Gresham. A niche at the top of the building holds his bust. The façade is decorated with stone reliefs. Between the two World Wars, the Gresham café was a meeting place for artists. The building was soon to be converted into a hotel.
